Leg one · Galveston Bay

Swim

500 meters

The race begins with a running beach start into Galveston Bay and a clearly marked open-water course.

  • Shin- to waist-deep water approaching the first buoy.
  • Approximately 6–7 feet deep between the course buoys.
  • Return to the beach and follow the route to transition.

Leg two · Texas City Dike

Bike

15 miles

The mostly flat and mostly closed course follows the Texas City Dike and nearby coastal roads.

  • Long, flat stretches make this a potentially fast course.
  • Galveston Bay views extend across much of the ride.
  • The exposed dike can make coastal wind part of the challenge.

Leg three · Waterfront Run

Run

3.1 miles

The closed run course combines waterfront stretches, Rainbow Park and an energetic finish area.

  • Water and park views appear throughout the course.
  • The final mile includes a groomed crushed-surface trail.
  • The finish and post-race area are inside Rainbow Park.
The challenge

How The Breakaway works.

The Breakaway mile moves to a different location within the bike course each year to keep you guessing and give returning athletes a fresh challenge every time.

01Choose the
challenge

Opt in to The Breakaway during registration. The challenge is available to athletes racing the Triathlon, Duathlon or Aquabike.

02Race with
two chips

You will receive a second timing chip for The Breakaway. Wear both: your regular chip records your entire event, while the Breakaway chip records only the timed mile.

03Go all-out
for one mile

Spot the first Breakaway flag, cross the timing mat and give the mile everything you have until you reach the second flag and mat.

04Keep racing
to the finish

Do not stop at either mat—your official event time is still running. Return to your normal pace, finish your race and turn in both timing chips.
